Matthew Short, last season's player of the tournament in the BBL, has been named Adelaide Strikers' new captain. Short takes over for all time from Travis Head having subbed for him last season. He scored 458 runs and guaranteed 11 wickets in the 2022-23 release of the competition and has since made his T20I and ODIs debut for Australia. He will be in the running for a spot in the following year's T20 World Cup crew in spite of the fact that there is a crush for top-request batting openings alongside Head, David Warner, Mitchell Bog, Steven Smith.
