Sourav Ganguly appointed Delhi Capitals head coach ahead of IPL 2027
In advance of IPL 2027, Sourav Ganguly has been hired as the new Delhi Capitals head coach. Hemang Badani, who held the position for the previous two seasons, is being replaced by the former India captain.
Ganguly has been associated with the Delhi Capitals franchise since 2019, when he joined as an advisor. Following his tenure as BCCI president, he was appointed Director of Cricket for both the men's and women's teams. He most recently led Pretoria Capitals to the SA20 final earlier this year as head coach.
I am eager to assume the position of Head Coach in the IPL. Ganguly stated, "Delhi Capitals is a franchise that is very dear to my heart and one with which I have shared a strong relationship over the years." "I have worked closely with the owners, management, support staff and players, which makes this an exciting responsibility for me. We have a talented group and have recently played a good style of cricket. I am looking forward to the new season and working with the team to build a strong and fearless team."
Ganguly will be tasked with guiding Delhi Capitals to their first IPL title. One of only two original franchises - Punjab Kings being the other - yet to win the competition, Delhi came closest in 2020 when they reached the final. The following year, they won the table, but they didn't make it to the final. Under Axar Patel and Hemang Badani, they finished sixth last year and haven't made the playoffs since that 2021 campaign.
The Capitals will be managed by the JSW group for the next two years in accordance with the split ownership model of the franchise. JSW Sports founder Parth Jindal said he hoped Ganguly's appointment would help the side mount a stronger challenge for the title. "Dada is a vital member of the Delhi Capitals family, and she has always been so. I am extremely honored and proud to announce that one of the greatest Indian captains and administrators will become the head coach of the Delhi Capitals.
"I am excited to see him take on this role, and I am confident that Delhi Capitals will be best prepared to compete for the IPL title under his leadership and vision." I cannot wait for all our players and staff to learn from Dada and am looking forward to seeing DC in action at the earliest.”
Prior to the November 15 deadline, Ganguly will first have to finalize his support staff and plan squad retentions. The mini auction ahead of the 2027 season will be held in mid-December in Goa.
