Bringing Back Reverse Swing: NZC Trialling Single-Ball Rule in Ford Trophy
Single-Ball Rule: New Zealand Cricket (NZC) is trialling the use of just one ball per innings for the first five rounds of the 2026-27 men's domestic one-day Ford Trophy.
"It reminds me of when you stumble across old international highlights, and watch the death bowling and you can see that the ball's a bit softer and reverse-swinging - and it's really difficult for the batter to score at more than a run-a-ball in those last 10-15 overs," Young said.
Current vs. Trial Format: Normally, ODI cricket utilizes two new balls from the start (with a replacement/choice allowed after the 34th over). Under this trial, a single ball will be used for all 50 overs.
Review Process: Because the tournament is split into two blocks, NZC will evaluate the trial after the opening five rounds to decide whether to continue with one ball or revert to the standard two-ball system for the remainder of the season in February.
Objectives & Rationale
Promoting Reverse Swing: The primary goal is to give bowlers more assistance and revive the art of reverse swing during the death overs.
Challenging Batters: Senior players like Central Stags' Will Young noted that a softer, older ball in the final 10–15 overs will make scoring above a run-a-ball much tougher, forcing batters to adapt their strategies and find new ways to generate strike rates.
Opening Fixtures & Context
Season Launch: The Ford Trophy kicks off with matches including Auckland Aces vs. Canterbury and Central Stags vs. Northern Districts. (The Wellington Firebirds vs. Otago Volts clash was rescheduled by a day due to flight cancellations.)
Broader Outlook: The trial gives domestic players a chance to experience conditions and tactical adjustments that could mirror upcoming international shifts ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
