Shadman Islam unbeaten 99 gives Bangladesh first-day honours against WI
Shadman Islam will spend the night one run short of a Test hundred after bad light ended an absorbing opening day in Mirpur, with Bangladesh on 213 for 3 against a disciplined West Indies attack.
Play was halted twice in the final session. The first stoppage came with Shadman closing in on the milestone. There were only four possible overs following the restart before the light returned. On 99, the left-hander remained undefeated. Throughout an innings in which three of his partners succumbed to loose strokes and a fourth was left on a stretcher, Shadman had remained the only constant.
At a venue that typically rewards batting, Bangladesh won the toss and batted first, as was expected. West Indies used the new ball well on a surface that offered some uneven bounce. The scoring was sluggish for the first half of the game as Jayden Seales and Shamar Joseph kept a tight line around the off stump. In the seventh over, Seales received his reward. Tanzid Hasan reached for a wider ball and edged it to Justin Greaves at second slip for 7 after he had worked on him from around the wicket.
Shadman looked uncertain early but began to settle, picking off boundaries from balls aimed at his pads before he started cutting and driving. Mominul Haque went after Roston Chase almost at once, and the pair added 59 for the second wicket. In the 22nd over, Jomel Warrican entered the fray and struck with his second pitch. Mominul came down the track to a flighted ball and hit it straight to Shamar at mid-off, to fall for 28.
After entering, Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto freely played. He drove debutant left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop straight for four, and Bangladesh went to lunch on 96 for 2 with Shadman on 42.
With a single off Seales in the 35th over, he scored fifty runs. Shortly thereafter, Shanto failed to sweep Warrican with a paddle. The LBW appeal was denied by the on-field umpire, but West Indies reviewed the play and ball-tracking revealed that the ball hit the middle and leg.
Towhid Hridoy appeared in his first Test since making his debut in July in Harare. He was allowed in because Mushfiqur Rahim had hurt his finger in training, but he batted with serious intent. He started with a straightforward boundary from Shamar and then pulled the same bowler strongly. Shadman moved at his own pace and only targeted deliveries in the areas where he was most effective. Shadman scored 79 out of 167 balls and Hridoy had 36 as Bangladesh reached tea on 177 for 3. At that point, their unbroken stand was worth 67.
The partnership kept growing after the break until Hridoy pulled up with a left leg problem while running between the wickets. On 42, he had to be removed on a stretcher. The hosts will be concerned about his fitness going into the second day. In the final session, as the light rapidly faded, Litton Das once more stabilized the innings.
