Vaishnavi Sharma's maiden five-wicket haul seals India's 3-0 ODI sweep
Before Pratika Rawal and Shafali Verma scored unbeaten half-centuries to lead India to an eight-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the third ODI in Vadodara on Wednesday (October 28), Vaishnavi Sharma picked up her first five-wicket haul in an ODI.
After winning the previous T20I series by the same margin, the hosts won the series 3-0.
After choosing to bat, Zimbabwe were bowled out for 131 in 39.5 overs thanks to Vaishnavi's 5 for 39 in her 10 overs. After that, Shafali struck an unbeaten 51 off just 26 deliveries and Rawal scored 59 not out off 56 balls to bring India home in just 17 overs.
After India struck twice in the first three overs, Zimbabwe, which chose to bat, never gained any momentum. Kranti Gaud took out Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano, who was caught by Shafali at slip, while Sayali Satghare had Loryn Phiri caught behind for a duck. By the end of the third over, Zimbabwe had only scored 12 runs, and India's new-ball bowlers controlled the scoring with disciplined lines and movement.
In her third ODI, Vaishnavi made an immediate impact when she came on in the 10th over. Beloved Biza, Zimbabwe's best batsman on this tour, tried to advance against the spinner, but Harmanpreet Kaur caught him at mid-on, and he was out for one out of 16 balls.
Modester Mupachikwa offered some resistance, striking boundaries to keep the innings moving, even as wickets continued to fall at the other end. Before Vaishnavi beat her as she came down the track and Yastika Bhatia completed the stumping to leave Zimbabwe 52 for 4 in the 16th over, the opener reached 37 off 48 deliveries with seven fours.
Chiedza Dhururu and Josephine Nkomo attempted to rebuild with a patient fifth-wicket partnership. Dhururu provided some support for Nkomo, who had struggled to score freely early on, as the pair added 43 runs. Dhururu chipped a delivery toward extra cover in the 28th over, but Vaishnavi broke the stand when Jintimani Kalita caught it.
After dismissing Michelle Mavunga and Nyasha Gwanzura in quick succession, Vaishnavi struck again, leaving Zimbabwe eight down. Olinder Chare was bowled by Satghare for a duck, and Nomvelo Sibanda was run out for three as the visitors were bowled out with over 10 overs remaining. Vaishnavi was supported by Gaud and Satghare, who each took two wickets.
India's chase got off to a surprising start when Yastika, playing her first ODI in two years, was run out in the first ball. The innings was quickly stabilized by Pratika Rawal and Harleen Deol, who was playing her first match of the series. Deol had 19 off 19 balls before being caught behind by Loryn Phiri, but Rawal was particularly proficient, consistently finding the boundary. India finished the ninth over at 59 for 2.
Shafali joined Rawal and ensured that there would be no further setbacks, batting at No. 4 rather than her usual opening position. She was aggressive right from the start, hitting the ball straight and using aggressive footwork to reach her fifty in just 24 balls, which was the second-fastest fifty by an Indian woman in an ODI. India was able to accelerate through the chase thanks to her six fours and three sixes, adding an unbroken 74 off 50 deliveries. Rawal remained unbeaten on 59, while Shafali finished on 51 not out as India crossed the line comfortably, drawing the curtains on a thoroughly dominant series.
