WPL 2027 Clash Forces Star England Players to Skip Sri Lanka T20Is
The Decision: Senior England Women players will be permitted by the ECB to miss an upcoming three-match T20I series in Sri Lanka if their respective franchises qualify for the final stages of WPL 2027 in India.
The Fixtures: Sri Lanka Cricket announced that the T20Is will take place in Pallekele from February 1 to 5, 2027, serving as preparation for the inaugural Women's T20 Champions Trophy. England will then return for three ODIs in Dambulla from March 4 to 8, following the conclusion of the Champions Trophy.
Affected Players & Franchise Commitments
Retained Stars: Captain Nat Sciver-Brunt (Mumbai Indians), Sophie Ecclestone (UP Warriorz), and Lauren Bell (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) are all retained for the 2027 WPL season (which runs from January 14 to February 7).
Policy Rationale: The ECB views high-stakes WPL playoff matches in relevant subcontinent conditions as ideal preparation for the upcoming Champions Trophy, mirroring previous instances where players arrived late for bilateral assignments due to franchise duties.
Broader Context & Training Plans
Red-Ball Focus: Head coach Charlotte Edwards emphasized a heightened focus on red-ball cricket following a heavy loss to India and an upcoming Ashes series, noting that players may see adjustments in their county commitments for specialized red-ball training camps in January.
The inaugural Women's Champions Trophy was initially scheduled to be played in Sri Lanka in June-July 2027. The dates were moved forward earlier this year by the ICC, who then stripped Sri Lanka of hosting rights over government interference in their cricket administration and relocated the tournament to India.
England will also hold a red-ball training camp in India in January, selection for which will take place in the coming weeks.
