Amir Jangoo ton leads West Indies to strong start in Sylhet
Amir Jangoo continued his dream run in the subcontinent, following his successful limited-overs tour of India with a century on Day 1 of the opening Test against Bangladesh in Sylhet. The 29-year-old batted with Justin Greaves, who went unbeaten on 35 and finished on 111 at stumps. After bad light ate into a few overs at the end, West Indies scored 235/4 in 70 overs.
It wasn't all rosy for the visitors. After a tough first hour in which Taskin Ahmed bowled openers Brandon King and Joshua da Silva and Hasan Mahmud bowled Kavem Hodge, they were stuck in a rut. West Indies slipped to 27/3 in just the ninth over and were in desperate need of a reviving stand.
That came through Jangoo and Kevin Wickham, whose first order of business was to drag the side to the drinks break, and Lunch without any further damage. That worked, elevating West Indies to 86/3 at halftime.
After lunch, they continued to bat together for 41.3 overs. They added 131 runs during the alliance, and Wickham reached his half-century.
Against the run of play, Mahmud managed to break through as he beat Wickham on the outside edge to clean him up after his patient 61. Jangoo then got to his second Test hundred in the company of Greaves, who stayed on until the end of the day's play.
